For the last couple of days my computer (both Windows XP and the Internet) have been painfully slow. I have run a couple of virus checks and spyware checks but nothing found. I checked and there are no windows updates due either.
Any ideas?

You could try clearing the IE cache. Within IE go to Tools->Internet Options and under Temporary Internet Files hit the Delete Files button. Don't worry about the idea of 'deleting' anything. It's very safe to do this.
Another quick question? Have you recently installed or upgraded any software? Also, if you can keep an eye on the PC, does the hard disk light flash lots? It might be that the PC is a bit short of memory and is having to use the disk more, which is heaps slower.
If you haven't rebooted the computer for a while, give it a re-boot. Some software still isn't great with how it manages memory (and XP isn't strict enough about it either) and even after closing an application it can continue to hog chunks of the computer's memory and slow it down. My Nikon software is terrible for this and I usually have to re-boot my laptop after jpeg'ing a bunch of photos to let XP sort itself out.
Try a disk defrag as well
