View Full Version : Can't walk and we go on Thursday! Updated again!
OMG I can't walk and we go next Thursday[msncry][msncry][msncry]
Last night my left knee became very swollen. painful and I could not walk on it[msnsad] after a trip to A&E they said it was prepatellar bursitis and it may take some time to heal and be usable[msncry][msncry][msncry]
I have made a private appointment with a physio this afternoon in the hope they can help speed up my recovery[msncry]
I am devastated, I can't believe this has happened so close to our departure date, I have everthing crossed that this will clear up enough by Thursday[msncry][msncry][msncry][msncry]
.................................................. .................................................. ...........................................
Well its almost 5 months since my first post so I thought i would post an update[msnwink]
A long story but due the NHS not letting people clog up consultant clinics I had to go through months useless and painful physio[msnmad]Plus waiting for the results of an MRI scan - results which Allied Medical sent to the NHS on the 10 Oct but the NHS lost for 4/5weeks[msnmad] Finally another week later I get given the results.............
A complex tear of the medial meniscus with the appearence of a horn flap tear and a radical tear to the free edge of the body. Also an irregularity of the cartilage at the medial aspect of the patella, consistent with chondromalacia plus a Baker's cyst but NO joint effusion (seen with arthritis)
Apparently its a common injury that footballers and athletes get [msnscared] so all that exercise I used to do has probably not done my knees any favours[msnsad] but I miss it so much and have been told once my knee has healed I can exercise again[sporty][msnsmile]
So I have been refered to a private surgical unit (on behalf of the NHS) for Arthroscopic surgery asap, I have the pre op with the nurse on Monday 3rd then I will have the initial consultant assessment then surgery should be within 28 days. I will then need about 6 weeks to heal[msnsad]
I am not looking forward to the surgery as I have developed a bit of a phobia about knees and would rather give birth again[msneek], but needs must so I will probably be on crutches for Christmas[msnsmile]

Oh no Julie!
Rest rest rest that's the key, keep off it as much as you can. I spend a lot of time at the Physio because of my back injury and if they can help you recover faster they will.
Keep us updated.
Thanks CDV I will do [msnsad]

Julie,
I had quite a nasty football injury a few years ago; the muscle was torn away from my pubic bone and I could't really walk. 3 days running with the sports therapist doing electro treatment and i was fairly comfotable and could get around. Even after 1 session i was walking of sorts so hopefully they can sort you out.

oh i'm so sorry Julie, i know how much you've been looking forward to this holiday, make sure you rest mrs and i will keep my fingers crossed for you[grouphug][grouphug][grouphug]

Hope everything gets sorted bofore you go.
You may want to consult your travel insurance as you may not be covered for this injury as it was pre existing before your trip. Most insurance companies expect you to pre notify them in advance of any pre existing medical condtions but will still cover you.
Thank you Andrew, Marie and Julieanne I will let you know how I get on[msncry][msncry][msncry]
Sorry to hear this Julie, so close to your date[msnsad]
If you remember I had a panic last year just before we were due to go and everything turned out ok, so fingers crossed for you.
Is this 'housemaid knee'[?], if so I believe lots of rest and packs of frozen veg will help.
Hope it goes well for you this afternoon.

Julie hope they can help you this afternoon. Just try and stay off the leg as much as possibble, plenty of rest. Otherwise i will have to help you onto the plane [msnwink]
Oh Julie, I really feel for you, so close to your holiday.[grouphug]

Oh Julie
I really know how you must be feeling - I was so looking forward to breaking up from school - three weeks doing all the jobs I just have not had the time to do, catching up with friends, shopping, shopping and more shopping. I pulled something in my back one night and for the last week have had to rely on 14 and 16 year old until hubby comes home from work. Just been to the doctors again and given me more tablets and said hopefully its on the mend - we travel in 13 days time. So I really hope you can rest and the thought of that Florida feeling keeps your spirits up.
Keep us posted as to how you are doing.

Julie a bag of frozen peas placed / wrapped around the knee will help. Be sure to put a label on the pea bag so they are not eaten afterward.
Hope you feel a lot better soon

quote
Prepatellar bursitis is the painful inflammation of the bursa, or fluid-filled cushion, that sits in front of the kneecap (patella). Triggered by an injury or infection, prepatellar bursitis can occur suddenly and clear up on its own, or become a chronic problem.

im sorry for you Julie, with suffering from extreme knee pain myself for many years, im sure if you rest and see the physio you could get on top of it in time for your holiday, we know how much your looking forward to it, may have to watch out for all the shopping you were probably gonna do, i so hope it gets better quickly, knee pain is nasty, im an expert at it! maybe some elbow cructhes so you can take some weight of it till next week at least?

Julie I'm not a doc but my knees are shot and when i had bursitis they recommended an anti inflammatory which cleared the fluid and hence the pain-check it out with your doc it might be worth a try.
I'm trying not to be a Job's comforter but the manipulation of therapy might aggravate it-if they can't guarantee a cure can it be delayed??
On the good side mine used to flare up and flare down almost as quickly so I really hope that you are OK for when you go.
Bob
I too know how devasting it can be to receive an injury just before a holiday that you have been looking forward to for ages. I few years ago I broke my wrist and the thought of going on holiday with a plaster on wasn't worth thinking about. I was really upset because I could not see me being able to go swimming in the pool, playing tennis etc. All the things I love to do on holiday. Needless to say, I too was very lucky as the plaster only had to stay on 3 weeks and I managed to convince the hospital to remove the plaster just a few days before we went away. Admittedly I couldn't play tennis but I could go for gentle swims and so the holiday worked out fine. Hope you have some good news by the end of the afternoon.
My knees and shoulders are shot with arthritis which have been injected and operated on many times but it doesn't stop me from going to Florida twice a year and having a great time. So I'm sure you'll be just fine.
As Neil and Cathy have said though, please let your insurance company know before you travel as they will deny any claim for anything else if you've not declared something. Don't take that risk, it's not worth it.
Julie I am sorry to hear about your knee. I know exactly how you are feeling.
I am feeling quite miserable because I have planta fasciitis which is an inflammation of the ligament in the foot and we leave on Friday. I can't walk properly and I'm getting desperate. I have been told it heals itself but can take as long as a year and sometimes requires steriod injections cos of the pain. I hope by some miracle it gets better before Friday.
Hi everyone, thank you all so much for all your kind words - its sounds like I am not the only one who is suffering[grouphug][grouphug][grouphug]
Turns out the cause is cartilage damage, I have micro tears in the cartilage and acute swelling.
The physio had given me some ultra sound treatment and elctro treatment, I have to take anti inflamatory tabs, ice, rest and keep the leg up and do the exercises she has given me and go back on Tuesday. I also have to use a crutch which is making getting around a lot easier and it has a tube bandage on it too[msnsad]
I am really glad I got physio so quickly as apparently it may help speed up the healing process - fingers crossed.
Hope the rest of you who are suffering also feel better soon[grouphug]

Julie
[grouphug][grouphug] for you and I hope you feel better very very soon
I too know what you are feeling. Less than 3 weeks before our first trip to Florida (which had taken 2 years of planning) I burst a disc in my spine. My doctors told me not to travel and that if I did my travel insurance would be invalidated. I was so desperate, I spend days crying my eyes out [msncry][msncry] I was determind to travel but I was in so much pain and I knew how long it could potentially take to heal. Someone that works with my DH suggested I see a Bowen Therapist. Now I had never heard of this type of therapy and when I read up on it I was sure that it wouldn't work - but I figured what did I have to lose??
After only 2 one hour sessions I was back on my feet and almost pain free. I had another session before we flew out to Florida and for all but the last 2 days of our 3 week holiday I was pain free [msnsmile2]
I called my therapist from Florida and booked another session for when I got back. Whenever my pain is unbearable or puts me out of action I give her a call - she really does work miracles.
I am not suggesting that this type of therapy works for everyone but it certainly worked for me when I was in your situation and continues to work for me when all else fails.
I really hope you get to go on your trip [grouphug]

Hope you get good treatment on TUESDAY and can go to FLORIDA .
I pulled my disc in my back and the doctor wanted me to take tablets .
But I went to a lady in our town and she was a sister before at our local hospital before doing a course on acupuncture She put the needles in my back .I went back 4 times and the pain went away ,Now I am careful how I bend ,lift things up and do as much exercise as can manage .
We were going on holiday so it was important that I could sit for hours on the plane but it was the best treatment, She worked with footballers and boxsers so knew her job .

Julie, do hope the knee gets better before you go. I suggest even if it is better to have a chair when you go to the Parks.
Adeline, I had that problem some years ago and the only thing that cured it was a steroid injection. It has not come back. If you do go down this route, make sure they inject into the centre of the pain. It will not work unless this is done. The first one I had the doctor ignored what I said and put it in where he thought he should. Needless to say it didn't work and I had to have another one, that worked.
What rotten timing Julie [msnsad]. Hope you're soon on the mend and able to enjoy your trip.
What rotten luck Julie, hope you are on the mend soon, if I can get online next week I shall see how you have got on - these physios can work wonders! (And mine will be bullying me into movement on Monday!)
Thanks Jill. My GP says I have to wait and see and is reluctant to give me a steroid injection at this point - it was only diagnosed last Friday. He doesn't understand that I have a lot of walking to do - shopping and visiting the parks.
Morning all, well there is a very slight improvement in my swelling and mobility so keeping up the rest, ice, meds and little exercises the physio gave me[msnsmile]
Got a sore hand from using the crutch but who cares I just want this to improve enough by Thursday!
How are my other fellow sufferers this morning Ahagan?[grouphug]
Thanks for asking Julie and I am glad you are feeling better this morning. I feel better this morning too, after doing some foot exercises last night. I am told I need to keep the foot moving as sitting or lying makes it worse because the ligament tense up with resting the foot, causing a lot of pain. I am keeping everything crossed for you too.

I really do hope you can get it sorted enough for you to enjoy your holiday Julie.
A couple of years ago. I was doing a (yes wait for it) Gymnastics class, They have what you would call a bouncy castle type floor, and I was doing a couple of arabsprings and on one I turned and twisted by ankle or so I thought. I could not move it, and it twisted in a way I thought it was broken, anyway medics came with the gas and air, helping enormously, and went to A&E turned out I torn the lateral and vertical liagaments, and all they could do was strap it up, and a set of crutches, I did this in early November and was travelling to Florida at Christmas, so though no problems. Nope it was still swollen and had to use the crutches all time we were there, but it was nice to zip through the airport pretty quickly.:D
Anyway I got fed up of the pain and swelling and went to private therapy, taking a look at the ankle, she asked me when did I do it, and by then it was about 3 months or so, WOW she said it looked like I had only done it about a week ago, Had the ultrasound etc to reduce the water rentention that was building up etc. looked marvelous after about three weeks or so, water retention was reducing, I was able to put my foot on the floor a lot more, and thats when we found out that I had also torn my achillies tendon as well, as I couldn't feel it before through all the water. I only wish I had gone a lot sooner, and maybe would have not been on crutches for so long, but I abided by the hospital rules.
Physio's can work miracles, Good luck Julie

Hope you get better soon Julie and Adeline. I had a similar problem a few Christmas's ago (which led to the start of internet shopping for me as I couldn't stand for long!) I was told I had loose cartilage in the joint and was booked in for an op to hoover out the bits. Thankfully though, it stopped hurting a week before the op date, about six months after it swelled up and has been pretty much ok ever since. I would always recommend seeing a physio before the damage gets any worse. The trouble is, most of us wait until we can stand it no longer!

If you are able to travel why not inform the airline of your injury and ask for assistance. They can provide a wheelchair for you from check in which saves the long walks round the terminal. You can also ask for help at the other end. There is a lot of standing around and queuing at airports and this is not good for swollen knees. It might help you enjoy the first few days of your holiday.
Fingers crossed
Hi all, no improvement today[msnsad] Knee is very sore and swollen off to see physio again tomorrow.

Back from physio, not going to improve any time soon - could be 6 weeks[msnsad]thats if it heals by itself, may need key hole if it does not heal but will worry about that when we get back from Florida, I have been told to use a chair at Disney etc
Had more ultra sound and electro treatment and been given exercises, plus rest and ice[msnsmile]

I have had to deal with this issue a few times. I ended up purchasing a ankle brace from a CVS pharmacy that I would use when I had to do a lot of walking. It helps keep the ligament in place and not over stretching. It made walking much more comfortable and I believe it help the healing, Here is a link

Maybe it will work for you!
Well its 4 weeks since I first posted, I did manage to get around albeit slowly and with crutches for most of the time in Florida.
4 weeks on its still very bruised, very uncomfortable and I am back to the physio tomorrow followed by a referal to a comsultant with the general concensous that I will need key hole surgery[msnsad]
I will never take my knees for granted again and once I get back to normal I will look after them far more than I did in the past[msnwink]

sorry to hear about your nightmare Julie.
Hope it gets sorted and you are better soon.

Wow I cannot believe your still suffering. Hope you get it sorted soon Julie.
You can get pink crutches now! I saw them for sale [about £80] on a gadget site -why not look the part while you have them!! hope you feel better soon- a friend of mine had this, he was scared to death- anyway, said it didn't hurt and he was up and moving, raring to go in no time- the relief for him was immense.
