View Full Version : direction of pool
Hello all, we are going to florida on 7th March for a week, and are looking at a villa with an east facing pool. Hubby is worried that we wont get enough sun at this time of year. Could anyone please enlighten us about this fact? thank yo

Hi Kate
It's almost impossible to say for sure as no two pools get the same amount of sun even when they both face the same direction - other factors come into play, like the location of trees, and other homes, also how far away from the house the pool is located. I would suggest you explain your concerns to the owner and ask them what you can expect.
We have a north facing pool but even in January it is in the sun nearly all day so as Caroline says there are other factors which can affect the amount of sun on a pool and it is best to speak to the owner.

We have a south east facing pool and at Christmas we lost the sun at about 3.30pm. It also depends if you are in a single or double storey house. Ours is single the one next door is double and they lost the sun quite a bit earlier. Having said that it is lovely first thing in the morning as the sun rises and in May/June we have sun until 5.00 - 5.30pm.
All the previous answers are correct but I would also ask are you wanting the pool in the sun or the pool deck for sun bathing?
I think everyones comments are correct, no 2 pools are the same, ours is north facing but we receive sun somewhere on the pool area all day. [msnsmile2]

The same was true for us. Our north facing pool was in the sun until very late in the day.

We have an easterly facing pool and we love it. We made a positive choice about it just as some people make a positive choice about south facing pools.
The sunrise from the lanai is fabulous. Later in the day when the sun can be a bit much for us,the lanai is shaded but we still get the sun on the pool itself from the southern end. In our case we also have a deck on the side of the home so serious sunworshipers can enjoy full sun if they so wish right until sunset.
The best thing to do is ask the owner and they will be able to give you a full picture.
Tell hubby not to worry.
Thank you all very much for your replies. I'll just be glad of ANY sun after the weather we are having here! It will be a lovely break and I'm sure we'll get plenty of that lovely Florida sunshine.I've decided to book the villa anyway, and if hubby complains he can take a deckchair out to the front and sun himself can't he?!![msnwink]

I really never worry about which way the pool is facing .I know the sun will find me out , what would be a major concern is that the pool is not overlooked . some years ago we rented a beautiful villa which was totally overlooked . I now always make sure we are backing on to a lake or a green area. Yes I know Im a bit odd .
Hi Kate,
I'm sure you will have a wonderful time and plenty of sunshine.
Our pool is East facing and like Angela we love it. Having breakfast on the pool deck in the early morning sun is fantastic. As our home is a single storey with no home directly behind it and no pools to either side to cast shadows we get sun on the pool deck until around 3.30pm in the afternoon in March . We have never had a guest complain that they didn't get enough sun and we have had several repeat guests who have visited in the winter months. I'm sure your hubby will not have a problem with getting a tan.

Mark makes a very valid point.
We have an east facing pool and in March would expect to loose the sun from the pool by 4pm, however a large proportion of the pool deck is in full sun until the sun goes down.[msncool]
I don't know how this 'must have a south facing pool' thing started. Probably because it could be important if you had a pool in the UK but it really isn't an issue in Florida. I don't have an axe to grind over this because of our 3 homes one pool faces north, another south west and another south. With all of them, apart from days when the sun doesn't shine there is always a sunny spot somewhere all year round. Like other owners we have never had a complaint about lack of sun on the pool or deck.
As others have also said even with a south facing pool it could be shaded by buildings or trees. The only way to be sure is to ask the owner but quite honestly I really don't think it will be a problem.
Just relax and enjoy your holiday [msncool]
thanks for your replies, as you all said, there will be sun on the pool most of the day, and what a wonderful start to the day,.....breakfast in glorious sunshine on the decking!!! thanks again, looking forward to the break1

Kate you've hit the nail on the head here! There is no better start to the day than breakfast by your pool. We eat outside as much as possible with the added bonus that the pool cage keeps all insects away. We could do with a cage over our patio in the U.K. We don't eat outside as much as we would like here because of wasps, flies, midges etc. Eating outside in the Florida sunshine without these pests is pure bliss [msnsmile2]
You're going to have a wonderful time :)

I like a more shaded pool area...I sit by friends pools and find it way to hot...unless you have a really cold spell its nice outside all year even in the shade...most of the homes get a bit of sun for a sun tan...and its nice for kids to play in the water without full sun on their heads for hours on end....
Nothing I like better than that first morning in Florida to have breakfast by the pool.
Our pool is south facing and in the heat of summer I wish it wasn't.
I think your pool will be fine, but do ask the owner.
