You wont be allowed needles if they spot it on xray machine or scissors. We had to bin a pair of nail scissors we'd forgotten about.
I'm with your mum I get bored with watching a screen and have knitted and crocheted various items on my trips, which I cant do any more.

thanks Steph for your reply.I know scissors are no longer allowed but I read some where that sewing needles 2" or less are allowed.Ive tried the travel agents who were going to check with Virgin(who we're flying with) but haven't heard yet.

My wife had a pencil sharpener taken off her at the gate just before boarding. I am all for security but do feel that the searches can be more educated; we were a party of my wife and myself, our 18 month old daughter and my parents both in their mid 70's.
The 5 to 10 minutes on this extra search could have been more wisely used and i am sure the security lady took the dangerous small plastic pencil sharpener more as a gesture to justify the search than anything else.
I will now get off of my hobby horse.
Have a great trip Deb; i know Virgin have there unhappy customers but we have always found them excellent.

I wouldn't even think about taking anything sharp - it just causes all sorts of problems and makes you get all het up which is the last thing you want just as you are boarding the plane for a super holiday. They are so spot on these days so forget the knitting or crochet and make do with a good book or the in flight films!

This may sound silly, but I have seen Cross-Stitich software in computer shops. If your mother can use a laptop, perhaps playing with a Cross-stitch CD-Rom might help her to pass the time.

They took away 2 tiny 'allen' keys which we had accidentally left in our hand luggage, after making up a child's chair for the villa. These were identified on the x-ray machine and our luggage searched. Didn't seem like a dangerous weapon to us, although I suppose we could have stuck them up the pilot's nose, had we had access to him.

However, the very thin glasses Virgin used for our drinks shattered into extremely dangerous shards and would, we thought have been potentially a lethal weapon - and there were hundreds of them on board and freely available!

Not sure if virtual cross stitch would have the same satisfaction as the real thing, though. All that grappling with threading a small needle takes a lot of beating!
