2 buy or not 2 buy - laptops

laptop question. my son has saved up, yes saved up for a lap top. now there are some good deals at present from pc world and currys and some good ones on their nets. will it be better to buy one during our trip from duty free at gatwick or a shop in kissimmee, and if so, will it be the same power, will it need a converter, what about guarantees and if so, wheres the best place non touristy to buy from. thanks

Do your homework before you go.....

COMP USA (quite expensive unless there's a special offer), Best Buy and Circuit City always have a good selection. You can check the prices online before you go - sometimes it's worthwhile sometimes it's not. They will all try to tell you that you are not covered in the UK unless you buy a warranty - this is sometimes but not always true. Toshiba definitely comes with an international warranty as I have just used mine with no problem. Check on the manufacturers websites before you go.

As far as power, just check that the transformer says that it will do 240V. All you'll need then is a figure 8 lead to plug from the transformer to a UK socket.

If I had to have windows laptop I would go for dell. I ahve gotten through quite few and the dell was the most reliable. However I can highly recomend a mac they are bomb proof and very user friendly.
You just need to look at the transformer to see if it says 115v - 220v on it, then either cut the plug off and replace with a uk or by a new lead. Average laptops are just as cheap here if you shop around.

I have just recently bought a Dell online and it was £419 , they seem to have different deals each month. I took it with me in November and used it at the villa with the Budget dial up and it was great. I also managed to pick someones wireless signal up evey now and then to0 so got some free hours !! It's a great little laptop and I have no complaints so far.

We have an HP and a Panasonic. The HP has had to have a new hard drive but it was changed within warranty FOC. (unlike all our un-backed up work..[msnembarrased]).

My job is to support laptops, and we've tried them all but now we only ever buy Panasonic. To be fair, Panasonic make them for us to our spec but eventually they appear in the shops in almost the same format.

They are very reliable so you could do worse.
