    American Airlines

    Hi,

We recently booked with American but would like views on what sort of entertainment is provided by them on flights. we did look at going with virgin but cost prevailed it as being dear as it was christmas.

If you have any views on food or entertainment on flights from LHR to Chigago and then down to orlando it would be great to hear from you.

We travel on AA relatively frequently, although not on the service you mentioned (apart from the Chicago to Orlando leg).

Our transatlantic planes have had the overhead TVs in the aisles and free headphones. The internal flights had the same option, although you pay $2 for your headphones (tip - keep the free ones from the transatlantic flight!).

Food is usually pretty good but the usual airline fodder but edible.

Seats are the best feature with longer than average leg room (at least on the transatlantic section).

On the whole, we'd recommend AA as one of the better indirect airlines.

American's 'More room through coach' promotion is long gone so the legroom is now pretty average.

As you are flying from Heathrow you will be on a 777 whereas I think Blott is referring to the Manchester service which is a 763 (the 757 Boston service appears to have been withdrawn for next year). The advice on inflight entertainment still applies though but the 777's have more updated equipment. A fair proportion of the Chicago-Orlando connections are on MD80's so no inflight entertainment of any kind on those!

The 777 economy seats are OK but be careful about where they put you - the middle seats are not great if your party doesn't take them all. Seatguru.com will help. Row 31 is easily the best but you'll be behind a long queue of AA's frequent flyers to get those.

An additional suggestion - American has direct 777 Heathrow-Miami flights (2 on some days). Because you aren't going all the way across to Chicago (and a different time zone) you should get to Orlando earlier and fly home later as its a very short flight to and from Miami. If you're keen on inflight entertainment, you will be guaranteed it all the way going by that service. If you can change the route, I'd take that.

re the miami jaunt - we flew into miami last year with virgin becuse it saved several hundred pounds for a family of 4, but its a bit of a drag driving up to kissimee, we used the turnpike.
it was a friday evening drive up and it was like wacky races with all the locals headin up country.i sorta enjoyed the race whilst the family slept

on the way home we used the amarillo road, the 27 which is a more mellow drive if you're not in a hurry but can get choked dual and single carriageways.

same old story 'pays yo money makes yo choice' , but in saying that i would rather fly direct to miami than have a stopover somewheres

I was really suggesting changing planes in Miami rather than in Chicago. The drive from Miami to Orlando would be very demanding after a 9 hour flight and, at that time of year, mainly in the dark!

It's fast to Orlando via Boston or Chicago than Miami with AA as we fly with AA from LHR all the time.

Given the choice we always go via Boston on the way out and via Chicago home as these are the best times.

    Hi Dave

    Outbound

    AA 113 - dep LHR 0805 arr MIA 1205
    AA 1600 - dep MIA 1432 arr MCO 1529

    Journey time = 12 hrs 24 mins - Distance = 4617 miles

AA is withdrawing its direct BOS-MCO service in December so it won't be available to Chyanmoor.

    Inbound

    AA 646 - dep MCO 1824 arr MIA 1925
    AA 56 - dep MIA 2010 arr LHR 0935

    Journey time = 10 hrs 11 mins - Distance = 4617 miles

    Shortest return via Chicago:

    AA 451 - dep MCO 1940 arr ORD 2132
    AA 98 - dep ORD 2220 arr LHR 1200

    Journey time = 11 hrs 20 mins - Distance = 4958 miles

As far as I can see, the Miami routes are always the shortest and quickest for LHR-MCO in both directions.

    Regards
