Thread: baby food

    baby food

We are flying to Orlando on Thursday (24th Aug)
We want to pack a few jars of baby food in our luggage (suitcases as well as hand luggage) - obviously for the flight, but also for when we arrive so that we don't have to go looking for a supermarket.
    Is this allowed?
On previous flights we seem to remember people leaving uneaten sandwiches etc in bins before getting off the plane.
Can anyone give us advice on this please.
For parents of young babies - can you buy baby food in the US which is similar to ours, we have a fussy baby!
    Thanks

I would definitely check with the airline on taking anything like baby food in hand luggage. The definition of 'liquids' is very wide (eg. toothpaste) so soft baby food may be prohibited. Baby milk is OK provided you taste it yourself in front of the security staff.

Even if you can take it on (which I doubt) you will have further problems at customs with anything that has been opened and left unfinished.

I'm not sure but I think you will be OK with unopened baby food in your checked bags.

I was under the impression baby food would also have to be tasted in front of security if you're carrying it in you hand luggage.[sick]

As for buying baby food in the US, yes you can, there are plenty on offer in all the supermarkets. The only thing we have taken in the past is our own baby milk.

i think you can take baby food for use on the plane in your hand luggage provided you taste it in front of security to prove that it is baby food and you can ditch the jars that are left over in the rubbish before getting off the plane at orlando airport, we had a stewardess come around with a rubbish bag especially for food items that you couldn't take in with you

the rest of the food would have to go in checked in luggage

i wonder have you asked the villa owner about arranging a welcome pack, you could maybe ask them to include a few jars of baby food in that

You're right - I've checked now and liquid baby food is OK if tasted.

A couple of years ago when my two were smaller, we took baby food in our Hand Luggage and in our suitcase. The food was taken off us at Customs.

I think that it was because they contained meat products.

If I were you I would check to see if this is still the case.

I would call the careline on his favourite brand and ask them. Sometimes companies have different brand names in different countries and you may not realise its the same food. Worth a go!

When we took our son at 6 months old, he too was fussy (he's nearly 5 now and still nearly as fussy!!), we couldn't get the same brands as home but found that Gerber did a good range and it could be bought in Walgreens, Publix etc.

We found a selection of baby food in Walmart. Gerber seems to be the main brand. Check out their products on www.gerber.com and they have a wide range from weaning right through to toddler.

Our daughter was 14 months last time we went and there were some she liked, and some she didn't. Any of the ones with cheese sauce were way too cheesy, but she liked most of the pasta ones.

If your baby is on cereal yet, be warned that I could not find an equivalent to Weetabix, so you might want to take some with you. Our dd also loves Cheerios (available in US) and they are really handy to take out and about for a snack too.

Lastly beware messy nappies due to change in diet/milk/water. Our dd's record was 6 complete changes of clothing in one day!
