It will not work in this country. It runs on a different system on the TV. Most consoles games, for any system, will not work either.
However, you will normally find that the games for the hand held machines like the DS will work with no problems. I think it is only films for the PSB where there is a problem.

We've been told the US Wii will work in the UK, with an adaptor, but only with US games. Our next door neighbour in Florida had just bought the Wii system when we were there in August to take back to the UK with him - he had researched the subject and was adamant it would work.
As Graham says, it will need to output a PAL signal to be sure it will work on a UK TV (US uses NTSC). However, many newer (especially Japanese) TVs can accept an NTSC signal and so should work with a US Wii. You might even find that the Wii itself is multi-standard. I guess you won't know until you try it.

Hi
The US version of the Wii use NTSC TV format and in the UK we use PAL. PAL is a better quality picture but unless your TV is really old you should be OK since most modern TVs can show NTSC or Pal but you'd need to check your TV
SCART sockets are a European thing and not used in the US where they use composite cables; you may have seen them on things like video cameras etc three cables yellow red and white, you can easily get a SCART TV adapter to plug these cables into then plug that into the SCART socket on your TV cost about £8. Some TV's have these sockets on the front and then you'd not need the adapter.
The power supply comes separate to the Wii and is not built into the console ,I.m not 100% sure a US one will work but mine (UK) states on it that it will work at 100v-240v so you'll just need the US to UK plug travel adapter; £2 or £3.
All Nintendo Wii games are region locked so if you buy a US Wii then it will only play US games Nintendo have also confirmed that a region specific Wii will only be able to connect to that regions Internet service so buy a US Wii and you will only be able to connect to the US Internet service for virtual games and the like; I'm assuming they will let you but they may block you too.
Because of the limitations for virtual games and inability to access the UK Nintendo web site for Wii downloads I purchased the UK version, and I'd recommend that is the best solution..
If you want to buy a games machine in the US then the PS3 works in the UK, I have one and it works fine.
Hope this helps
We had considered a PS3 for the villa and was hoping to bring it home with us for Christmas and then return it next Easter. Will the US PS3 work on our Electrical system and also do the UK games work on a US machine?

The PS3 will work in the UK and US & so will the games, we now have two from the US and one from the UK and they are all happy[msnsmile2].
The big plus (some say) is the US machine has the PS2 Hardware in it so plays all the PS2 games too. The rest of the worlds PS3's emulate the PS2 (the PS3 is very powerful so can do this with ease) therfore not all PS2 games can be played, mainly older ones but this is changing all the time.
It is worth remembering the PS2 is the best selling games console ever and in the US is still outselling the others. Sony say they will continue to sell it till at least 2010 so I'm in no rush to replace our PS2 in the villa[msncool].
