Ignore this - I've got an answer now. In case anyone else wants to know - I can have either but I think I will go with the one I get before I go as then I can play with it ahead of time and put our route in.

Buy one over there. They are a lot cheaper than the UK. I got a TOM TOM from Walmart for a good price including life long map updates. You can also download UK & Europe maps for about £60.00 if you wish to use it at home. Have a look on Walmart and Super Target websites to get some idea! Have a great trip.
I don't need one for the UK since we have a built-in one in the car and the hire cost is very reasonable - far less than buying even a cheap one. I was just a bit confused about which options to choose with my car hire.

The service provided from this site is very good for sat nav. It arrives before you leave with your villa address pre-programmed as 'home' and has all the attractions in there as favourites.
